Urban Development

Well-functioning and productive urban and municipal centres are essential to economic growth and development. With the increase in urban population, there is an urgent need for improving urban infrastructure and services delivery. The rapid urbanization process taking place in many developing countries has put particular emphasis on national and local authorities to meet the demands of their growing urban populations. Inadequate urban infrastructure, limited institutional capacity, inappropriate legislative structures, a weak economic base and insufficient and irregular municipal financing are just some of the challenges. Among urban policy-makers and donors, there is an increasing awareness of the need to address urbanization and urban development in a coordinated and comprehensive manner with new sets of objectives based on multi-sector perspectives and public participation, building on principles of securing well governed, competitive and sustainable urban areas. One of RPMC’s core fields of expertise is inter-disciplinary urban and semi-urban development, linking many disciplines, i.e. infrastructure, policy formulation, water supply, environment and climate change. RPMC has extensive experience supporting municipalities to address both technical and institutional issues, including physical planning and urban and municipal management and administration.
